Will Beckham work in the USA?

While many say that David Beckham might be the one that finally adds credibility to soccer in the USA and make it an iconic sport, many critics have simply said that it would not work. The critic’s main argument is that since not even Brazil's Pele, who signed in 1975 to play in MLS's defunct predecessor in the USA, could make that difference in the sport, much certainly Beckham would not be able to do it.

However, the Sports Guru here dares to disagree with the critics and say that Beckham WILL make a big difference in the USA simply because he is not just a good soccer player, but he is a star and worldwide known figure in the sport. When you want somebody to bring credibility to a sport lacking popularity anywhere in the world, you have to bring somebody that is not only a soccer player, but can have great influence off the field as well. Ever since the American public knew of the Beckham signing, L.A galaxy tickets have been sold quicker than hot bread. Even though the effects of Beckham and his signing of a 5 year, 250 million dollar contract are starting to show off, the soccer star himself remains prudent in his expectations.

"I am not saying my coming to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America because that is going to be very difficult to achieve," Beckham said last week.

"But I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't believe I could make a difference and take soccer to a different level."

Even though Beckham doesn't have the "sky is the limit" attitude, the Galaxy front office sees U.S. attendance finally topping the 15,000-per-game level it has been stuck at for several years and I personally see this number way higher in the upcoming years and people must remember that as more and more fans soccer attracts more and even more will follow. Ten years from now, people will look back and realize what a big difference this signing made to the sport, and soccer finally wont be considered in the USA as just being a women's sport anymore.

GURU'S RUMOR MILL

LATES RUMORS/FACTS(UPDATED 1/22/2007): by Ben Maller
1.JASON KIDD TO LAKERS?
There are exceptions. If Jason Kidd were to somehow become available or, to a lesser degree, Andre Miller, there would be quite a few interested teams. I'm sure the Lakers would lob a phone call or two as well. Both of those players have two more seasons left on their contracts, Kidd for a total of $41 million, Miller for a more manageable $19 million.

2.PAUL GASSOL TO BULLS? GASSOL WANTS OUT OF MEMPHIS!
Grizzlies center Pau Gasol won't say as much but his actions and agent have delivered the message. The 7-footer wants out of Memphis. Pronto. Given Gasol's play and the feelers his agent, Arn Tellem, have lobbed around the NBA recently, the Grizzlies are suddenly forced to consider their future without someone they've deemed the franchise player. Gasol, who has four years and more than $60 million left on a maximum contract, is one of the few skilled post players in the league. Still, a Gasol deal with the Bulls could be consummated if they were willing to part with guard Ben Gordon and forward Luol Deng.

3.KEVIN GARNETT TO KNICKS?
It's not likely Kevin Garnett will be moved this season, though it is possible he might ask for a trade - at 30 years old, he has said he is not interested in another rebuilding project - if the Timberwolves fail to make the playoffs for a third straight year. Could the Knicks make a play for Garnett, the highest-paid player in the NBA at $21 million? Only if they can convince Minnesota to take on Steve Francis' big contract as a starting point. The Knicks would almost have to include a few of their young players. It might include Channing Frye to start and Nate Robinson, a favorite of Minnesota coach Dwane Casey, as well.

4.SORIANO TO PHILLIES?
The Phillies quest to sign Alfonso Soriano is heating up. GM Pat Gillick confirmed that team officials would meet with the leftfielder's representatives today. A meeting between the sides that had been scheduled for yesterday had to be pushed back because of scheduling conflicts. Gillick confirmed that the team had not yet made an offer to Soriano, who also is drawing interest from the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs and Astros. Soriano is seeking a contract similar to the seven-year, $119 million deal that Carlos Beltran got from the Mets two winters ago. "We like him," Gillick said. "We're studying the situation." The Phillies definitely will talk money in their talks with Soriano's agents, but it's unclear whether an offer will come out of today's meeting. Word around baseball is that the Angels are ready to meet Soriano's price. However, people close to Soriano have said he wants to stay on the East Coast.

5.ARE PETTITE AND CLEMENS GOING BACK TO THE YANKEES?
Two old New York friends filed for free agency yesterday and though neither Roger Clemens nor Andy Pettitte has decided whether to play next season, the Yankees intend to inquire about both, according to a team source. The Yankees have talked internally about pursuing Pettitte, who left the Bronx after the 2003 season to sign with his hometown team, the Astros. And Pettitte apparently has told confidants that he would consider a return to New York, if he does continue to play. But nothing has been decided according to agent Randy Hendricks, who along with his bother, Alan, represents both players. "We will listen to anyone who calls," Hendricks said in an E-mail yesterday. "Neither player has decided whether he will play next year."

6.IS DAUNTE CULPEPPER DONE?
Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper will not play against Kansas City on Sunday, missing his fifth consecutive game. As he has done the past two weeks, he also has not been involved in practices. Despite the news, Saban believes Culpepper had a good week compared to the previous two. ''No, he's been doing good,'' Saban said when asked if Culpepper had missed any of his scheduled rehabilitation work for his right knee. ``He's done well this week. He had a good week so far.'' Culpepper has declined all requests for comments the past four weeks.

7.SAMMY SOSA IS BACK?
Reports say that Sosa's Agent talked to Dominican Reporters and said Sammy Sosa would love to be back next season and reach 600 Hrs. Since the report, manny teams have phoned asking for Sosa including the Mets and the Padres in hopes of landing the potential free agent slugger as a backup outfielder.

8.PHIL'S BURELL TO GIANTS?
Since GM Pat Gillick was hired a year ago, the Phillies' general manager has been trying to trade leftfielder Pat Burrell. The main obstacle: Burrell's full no-trade clause. To this point, Burrell has indicated that he would waive the clause only in deals that would send him to New York or Boston. The Phillies can add San Francisco to that list. Burrell's representatives indicated yesterday that he would accept a trade to the Giants. That team could ask Burrell to switch back to first base, the position he played in 2000. ... In trade, the Giants might want the Phillies, who are looking for bullpen help, to take closer Armando Benitez, who comes with plenty of baggage: a $7.6 million salary for this season, the last on his contract; his bad knees, which limited him to 41 games this season; and a poor reputation as a teammate.

9.MLB-WHERE WILL THE YANKEES TRADE SHEFFIELD AND FOR WHO?(10/27/2006):
New York Yankees slugger Gary Sheffield, informed Wednesday that the Yankees will pick up his $13 million option in 2007, was angry by the decision, hoping instead the Yankees would let him go. ""This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told USA TODAY. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that." Where is he going to be traded by Boras?

11.MLB- WILL TOM GLAVINE RETURN TO BRAVES?(10/24/2006)
While there is a chance Tom Glavine could return to the Braves in 2007, the veteran pitcher probably would have to accept a significantly smaller salary than he'd get if he stays with the Mets. And that seems unlikely. Glavine, who has 290 wins and will turn 41 during spring training, told reporters Friday he would talk to his family about whether to stay with the Mets or return to the Braves, the only other team he says he'd pitch for.

12.NFL-LB BRIGGS WAITING ON BEARS CONTRACT TALKS?(10/24/2006)
There are no secret negotiations going on between the Bears and LB Lance Briggs' agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Briggs says everything is on hold until the Bears complete their season. He scoffed at a two-line report in the Miami Herald last week that suggested he wants to play for the Dolphins but might not be coveted by that team because it is expected to put all of its resources into improving a wretched offensive line. Briggs knows that kind of speculation will increase as the season goes on. ''The more success we have, the more people are going to talk about: 'Who is going to stay? Who can we get, and what can we grab? Can we get a piece of this great defense?''' Briggs said.

Knicks guard Stephon Marbury is trying to sell his own TV talk show, according to the NEW YORK POST.Marbury has filmed a handful of demo shows, including a one-hour interview with Kobe Bryant. His reps have been shopping the show around.
"We just haven't taken anything," Marbury told The Post. "We've had offers. We're looking for the right deal."Marbury can be a tough interview when he's displeased with the tone of certain questions. But he feels he's a good interviewer, despite not taking any broadcast journalism courses in his one year at Georgia Tech

Yankees and what they need.

Here we ago again, the once inmortal Yankees falter in the playoffs. Many people ask how can a team that used to have less than half of the 200 Million payroll they currently have cannot win anymore. The answers are simple...and they start with the fact that money can buy a good season player but not a good playoff performer.

What the Yankees need to do:

1. TRADE A -ROD - This is a no brainer here, after another poor playoff performance against the Tigers does it. With those 20 million dollars you can sign a couple of good stars that actually play well under pressure. Dont get me wrong A-rod is a great player, but he can't play in New York!

2. Focus on Starting Pitching Cashman needs to say enough is enough and cut Wright, Pavano and Johnson off(I dont care how much they owe them) and bring three other decent starters to complement Wang and Mussina. Maybe now Cashman will get serious about getting a big game pitcher and get a pitcher like Smoltz, Zito or even El Duque who has been great before getting injured.

3. Focus on young talent and dont make major changes to the roster every summer Let this team develop chemistry, trust just like the old yankees team used to be, surrounded by guys who have played long together and could pick each other up.

4.Dont touch the bullpen Kyle and Octavio will bounce back and be your 7th and 8th inning guys and with Mariano you dont need much else, maybe add a left handed specialist.

5. Boss sit back, zip your trap and dont create controversy and pressure Coach Torre, finally watch your Yankees win again within the next three years. new York, rejoice.

NBA POWER RANKINGS

1 (6) Heat (52-30) Obviously, the defending champion Miami Heat are on top
of the hoops world for now. Gary and Shaq are getting older, but their young rookies (Simien and Wright) and the further improvement of Dwayne Wade will make up the difference.
2 (3) Mavericks (60-22) Now the Mavs in addition to a sour taste in their mouth, have an even deeper bench than they did last year, watch out for them especially at the begining of the season look for a very good start from this team.
3 (2) Spurs (63-19) Another team with a very sour taste after their early playoff exit in the hand of the Mavs. Expect Tony Parker to have an MVP candidate season and some of their young rookies to improve and bring some punch of their bench.
4 (12) Bulls 41-41 Critics may think this team still lacks playoffs experience, but after giving Miami a run for their money last time, and adding Ben Wallace and PJ Brown this team is now a legit threat to win it all once again.
5 Suns 54-28 If Amare is healthy, then the Suns are my pick to win the West. But with that type of surgery he had believe me that might be a big if. However, count on Nash and Marion to make a better Championship push regardless.

6(1) Pistons 64-18 This team has shown in the past that they grow in adversity, but the lost of Ben Wallace(Team Image) might be too big of a blow.
Their image as a defensive first team will be no more.
7 (23) Rockets 34-48 Mcgrady's back problems is still the main issue here, but Yao's great season , plus the addition of Bonzi has Rockets fan with a fresh wind of hope, expect a great season and a good championship push if Tmac healthy.
8 (8) Cavaliers 50-32 Lebron will be great, even better than last season but the X factor on this team will be Larry Hughes, can he bounce back?
9 (5) Nets 49-33 The Nets are just a center away from being with the elite in the east, will they get this center before the playoffs? If not, expect another early exit from the playoffs.
10 (13) Clippers 47-35 Clippers improved greatly last year, the only problem is that "Sam I am" is not getting any younger, and they havent added any talent to complement him and Elton Brand.

11 (18) Pacers 41-41 Expect the Pacers to be the biggest "sleeper" team.
The addittion of Al Harrington will once again bring them to the elite of the east under Coach Carselie.
12 (10) Lakers 45-37 Why would I think the Lakers will be in the playoffs this year? Kobe keeps improving and they have finally added some good shooters around him.. only if Kwame started living to just half of his potential...
13 (19) Hornets 38-44 Expect impressive ex-rookie Chris Paul and Peja to lead this team into the playoffs, as simple as that.
14 (14) Nuggets 44-38 The roster looks improved and so does Anthony, but the problems are still there in that the Nuggets need shooters and need the coach George and K-Mart to co-exist somehow.
15 (22) Warriors 38-44 Will the Warriors end their playoff dessert and find the oasis...? It all depends on Baron Davis.

16 (9) Magic 36-46 Talk about sleepers.. this team will impress alot of people this year, they have very good young talent. Expect great things from Darko, Howard and Arroyo.
17 (16) Jazz 41-41 Andrei is the most underrated player in the league, but the only hope for the Jazz is that Carlos Boozer finally gives them a good season..
18 (29) Knicks 23-59 Everybody expects the knicks to do even worse without Coach Brown, but you will be surprised that they will actually be there at the end of the playoff race due to better team chemistry developed, they do have the stars, the potential....its the chemistry that has always been a bust. Only if Starbury for once became a team player.
19 (17) Bucks 40-42 The addition of Charlie Villanueva should improve their backcourt, but they still have too many holes in their defense.
20 (15) Wizards 42-40 Arenas sounds like a big name, but its just a single player.. and even though he is a star, he cant do everything. Expect a poor season here.

21 (25) Timberwolves 33-49 They should trade KG, I really feel sorry for him but again same here, one person doesnt make a team.
22 (7) Grizzlies 49-33 This team was decent last year, but the trading of Jones and the injuries they already have will make them miss the playoffs.
23 (11) Kings 44-38 Expect the Kings to play like Queens without Bonzi, how come they didnt make any other trades? Artest will be Arfailedthetest!
24 (24) Celtics 33-49 GM Danny Ainge is time that you actually make good moves and bring this team talent, this team has none. Bird will not come flying back.
25 (26) Raptors 27-55 Too many rookies here, even though Bosh seems very promising... how long will Sam get to coach them?

26 (21) SuperSonics 35-47 Expect another good lottery pick next season.
27 (27) Bobcats 26-56 MJ as Part owner doesnt help since he cant play anymore, Emeka is good but again its only one player..
28 (28) Hawks 26-56 They are still bad but watch out for the on-the-rise lefty (Josh) and Joe.
29 (20) 76ers 38-44 Expect this team to trade AI and diminish into nothingness...is time to start over again..
30 (30) Trail Blazers 21-61 This team has no chance whatsoever, they will not be blazing any trails this season!

MLB PREDICTIONS(WHO WILL WIN WILD CARD?)

Hey all, beneath are my predictions on who will win each division/wild card Enjoy

AL EAST- Boston Redsox
The Yankess will make it interesting till the very end, but their many injuries will come back to haunt them when they fall just short and miss the playoffs. Also Boston's pitching one-two punch is too good and we can expect Josh Beckett to lower that ERA soon and probably win 20 games along with Schilling who also figures to be close to the 20 mark as well.

AL CENTRAL- Detroit Tigers
The biggest surprise of this season figures to take this division EASILY from the Whitesox. They have a great young rotation that wont burn out by season's end and a very consistent offense led by the resurgence of Magglio Ordonez.
If it does get interesting at the end with the Sox for the division it would be beacause of their bullpen, which I think is their disadvantage against the Sox.

AL WEST - OAKLAND A's
This will be a very hard fought division but not among the teams you might think. It will be among the A's and the all sudden red hot Angels. Both teams have their ups and downs on pitching(Rotation Advantage A's, Bullpen Advantage Angels) and the Angels have a slight advantage on offense with Vlad Guerrero hitting everything he sees on the middle of that lineup. But I think the X Factor will be the starting Rotation, especially when Harden gets back for the A's.

AL Wild Card - Whitesox
There is nothing much to say here, except that the Yankees wont make the playoffs for the first time in many years. Also from what we have learned, from the past years, watch out for these wild card teams!

Laters MLB Rumors(MUST READ!)

There are many speculations out there on which top players are switching caps before the trading deadline, but few of these are legit. While in other places you get charged for insiders content, I am willing to provide here what I know for free, bookmark this and check back often since I will be adding new ones daily.
Ok here we go.
(updated July 13, 2006)
Jason Schmidt San Francisco Giants --> Chicago Whitesox
Despite their octane offense, the Whitesox need more pitching, and are said to be pursuing Giants right-hander Jason Schmidt.
"Typical Kenny Williams," a club executive who had heard this talk . "Laying in the weeds, staying quiet and trying to make the biggest deal of them all." I think they will end up trading Brandon McCarthy along with center fielder Brian Anderson for Schmidt. But before making this deal, which I believe will happen soon, they need to get a new center fielder first.

(updated July 13, 2006)
Greg Maddux Chicago Cubs --> Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have asked about the availability of Greg Maddux. whose brother is the Brewers' pitching coach. Ned Yost, the Brewers' manager, was also a coach with the Braves for a time when Maddux played in Atlanta.
Maddux, in the final season of his contract, doesn't have a no-trade clause in his current contract, but it's believed the Cubs won't trade him unless he agrees to the deal. The Dodgers are among the other teams who are thought to be interested in acquiring the 40-year-old Maddux.

MLB All Star Game(can the NL Win One)

Is it Bad Luck? Is there anything such as luck in sports? Or can it be considered a lack of effort, talent or a curse? For whatever the cause you think it maybe, the National League hasn't won the All Start game now for 10 years..! Can you believe that 10 years! You might want to make the case that any team that has a 10 game winning streak over the other is just simply because they own them but what about a team that changes every year and that actually has many players who switch sides (When they are traded from one league to the other like Carlos Beltran)
For this reason and after watching the National League bust themselves for 9 innings and give up a one run lead with two outs in the 9th inning I can conclude that the NL is facing this losing streak not because of lack of effort or talent... is because of BAD LUCK... and this may signal the beginning of a curse. You may say "Who cares about the All Star Game Sports Guru?" Well if you are a true baseball fan with a GOOD team you would because it unfortunately determines home advantage in the World Series!!! That is why they need to end this "whoever wins gets home court right now" and make it so that the team with the best overall record gets the advantage. The guru has talked, what do you guys all think?
